Commemorating the "mermaid" cruise of Count Ödön Széchenyi, floodlight has been lit on Kossuth Museum Ship.
The son of Count István Széchenyi, Count Ödön Széchenyi, started off on 6th April 1867 from Pest on River Danube with his steamboat, named "Mermaid". He wanted to sail to Paris in order to participate in Paris World Fair. The ship arrived to France's capital city on 18th May 1867. This achievement was rightly regarded to be fantastic by his contemporaries. The "Mermaid" cruise of Count Széchenyi was significant, and it still has an influence on shipping on River Danube today.
